A convicted felon is in custody for a crime spree Tuesday in Kansas City that left three people dead and two people in a hospital in critical condition.

The charges against 34-year-old Brandon B. Howell include three counts of first-degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, and two counts of first-degree assault. Howell is accused of shooting three people dead and brutally beating a couple in the same Kansas City neighborhood. He also allegedly assaulted two people at a Northland hotel.

The Kansas City Star reports Howell was sentenced to prison for a 1999 home invasion robbery during which a pet cat was beheaded. He was paroled in 2011.
