The family of Michael Brown is calling for a halt to protests today while he is laid to rest, more than two weeks after he was fatally shot by a Ferguson police officer.

Brown’s mother and father spoke to the crowd at St. Louis’ Peace Fest Sunday. Michael Brown, Senior, asked for a day without protests or violence on Monday.

“All I want is peace while my son is being laid to rest,” Brown said. “A day of silence so we can lay our son to rest. Please. That’s all I ask.”

Brown’s death has sparked days of protests, some of which turned to looting and property damage.

Brown was joined by Al Sharpton, who echoed the call for peace.

“No matter what they say or do tomorrow, mum’s the word until we lay Michael to rest,” Sharpton said. “Then, justice. Justice is the agenda.”

Also addressing the crowd were the parents of Trayvon Martin, a Florida teen killed in 2012 by a community watch volunteer. Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, pledged support for the Brown family and those protesting after Brown’s death.

“We are here for you,” Fulton told the crowd amid cheers. “We want you guys to stay focused on what you need to do for your community.”

Brown’s funeral is at 10 this morning at the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis. The family is asking for memorials to go to the Michael Brown Jr. Memorial Fund at Fifth Third Bank or to be made online to www.gofundme.com/justiceformikebrown.

The Brown family also ask for the media to “respect their privacy during this period of mourning.”
