Royals starter Danny Duffy was rolling along, holding onto a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, until Matt McBride, just called up from Triple-A, hit a grand slam to lift the Colorado Rockies past the Royals in a 5-2 final.
After getting two quick outs in the sixth, Duffy didn’t get help from his defense as Chrisitan Colon threw a one-hopper to first that Billy Butler couldn’t scoop. Wilin Rosario singled and Corey Dickerson drew a walk to set up McBride.
“I wish I could take it back and make the play,” Colon said.
Duffy has pitched his heart out this season, but falls to 8-11 on the season. Â He is the only starting pitcher in the American League that has an ERA under three runs per game, but has a losing record.
