“I thought for sure the ball was going foul,” said Miami Marlins second baseman Donovan Solano.

Coming into Tuesday night’s game, Solano had hit just six home runs in 874 plate appearances.  His two run shot that hit the left fair pole capped off a three-run inning in the fourth in what turned out to be the final.  The Cardinals 3-0 loss prevented Adam Wainwright from reaching his 15th win of the season.

“That ball was 10 feet foul and it came back fair. It was just the craziest ball flight I’ve ever seen,” Wainwright said. “He thought it was foul, the umpire thought it was foul, I thought it was foul, everyone in the park thought it was foul. And then the ball started having this ball flight back to the pole, and it ended up hitting the pole. You can’t do anything about that.”

Solano was signed as a free agent amateur in 2005 by the Cardinals as a 17-year old.  He was released in 2011.  He didn’t appear in the majors until 2012 with Miami.

Jarred Cosart allowed three hits and one walk to win for the first time since July 7. The victory came in his second start for Miami after being acquired from Houston.

Mark Elllis picked up two of the Cardinals total of four hits.

Milwaukee lost 3-0 to the Cubs, keeping St. Louis three behind.  Pittburgh’s win over Detroit, moved the Pirates 1.5 games ahead for the top wild card spot.
