Royals catcher Salvador Perez tagged out Prince Fielder of Detroit, who tried to score from first base on a double with two outs in the ninth. The perfect relay throw nailed Fielder and gave the Royals a 1-0 victory.
Fielder walked to open the ninth off closer Greg Holland, who picked up his 43rd save. Omar Infante’s two-out double went into the left field corner. Gold Glover Alex Gordon made a strong throw to Alcides Escobar, who delivered the relay throw to Perez.
Big boy Prince shielded the ball from Sal.
“I didn’t see the ball,” Perez said. “I just put my glove down and got the short hop and tagged him.”
Eric Hosmer’s RBI triple in the first was the game winner. Â The Royals are 3.5 games out in the wild card.
