Matt Adams was just activated from the DL with a calf strain for Friday’s opener against the Washington Nationals and it started a great weekend comeback for the first baseman. He homered in the second inning on Friday night against Ryan Zimmerman, snapping the Nats pitcher’s personal 19-inning shutout string. It was the only run scored in a 1-0 win to start the series. Saturday, Adams led off the seventh against Stephen Strasburg, putting the Cardinals 2-1 in an eventual 4-1 win. Then on Sunday, Adams homered again, a two run shot off Doug Fister in the second for a 5-2 Cardinals sweep. For the three games, Adams went 4 for 11 with three homers, 4 RBIs and in all three games, he gets credited with the game winning RBI.
Cardinals starting pitchers were amazing throughout the series as they have been all season. Lance Lynn, Shelby Miller and Jaime Garcia allowed just three earned runs in 21.2 innings while only allowing 11 hits, six walks and 21 strikeouts…amazing numbers.
The Cardinals have won six of seven, 3.5 games behind Milwaukee and they play the Mets starting Monday night.
