The Cleveland Indians came into Tuesday night’s game at Kauffman Stadium, winners in nine of their last 10 and 14 of their last 20, but it was the Royals who were red hot. They hit three homers in the same game for the first time this season, as the Royals cooled off the Indians 9-5.
Eric Hosmer homered in the fifth to make it a 6-0 game. Alex Gordon had a solo shot in the eighth and Mike Moustakas hit a two run homer in that same inning to open up a 9-3 lead. For Hosmer it was his third of the year, Gordon’s seventh and the fifth for Moustakas.
Lefty Jason Vargas held down an Indians offense that scored 17 runs the night before. He gave up six hits and hit three batters, but didn’t allow a run until Jason Kipnis drove in a pair with a two-out double in the eighth. Vargas left in the eighth and was charged with three runs. Aaron Crow gave up two more in the ninth, but it was too little, too late for Cleveland.
The Royals climbed back to .500 at 32-32, just a half game behind Cleveland, three behind Detroit.
