This one hurts. San Diego actually rallied three times in Monday night’s game, using the long ball and late inning heroics to send the Royals to their fifth straight loss, a 6-5 final at Petco Park.
Jedd Gyorko, who is hitting.164, hit a solo homer with one out in the ninth inning off Royals closer Greg Holland to tie the game at 4-4 and send it to extras. It was Holland’s first blown save in eight chances this season. Earlier, after the Royals jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run shot off rookie Yordano Ventura in the sixth to tie the score 3-3.
In the 12th, the Royals when Mike Moustakas hit an RBI single to score Salvador Perez off Tim Stauffer. In the bottom half, Chris Denorfia led off with a single off Louis Coleman before Ned Yost went to Tim Collins. After a sacrifice, Yonder Alonso reached on a bloop double. Will Venable then delivered a two run single giving the Padres their second, walk-off win in back to back days.
Eric Hosmer homered and drove in three runs for the Royals and Lorenzo Cain, just off the DL had four hits. The Royals had a season high 16 hits.
