St. Louis Cardinals pitchers held the Cincinnati Reds to a modern franchise record 17 innings without scoring a run. However, in the 18th inning of their season, the Reds pushed across the only run on Wednesday night’s game for a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals.

Ryan Ludwick and Todd Frazier started the ninth with singles off Carlos Martinez (0-1). After a sacrifice, Brayan Pena was walked to load the bases and Chris Heisey’s single to center was the game winning hit.

The teams had to wait out a 2-hour and 40-minute rain delay at the start of the game. Both clubs were determined to get the game in with more rain scheduled during Thursday afternoon’s finale.

Reds starter Tony Cingrani held the Cardinals to a couple of singles and two walks in seven innings. Meanwhile, Michael Wacha was equally as tough, allowing just three hits in 6.2 innings. He worked out of a threat in the fourth, getting Zack Cozart to ground into a forceout with the bases loaded.
