A pair of former Missouri Tigers created fits for the Royals this afternoon in Detroit. Second baseman Ian Kinsler hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning off starter Jason Vargas, then singled home the winning run in the tenth for a 2-1 final at Comerica Park.

Vargas pitched well, despite hanging a slide to Kinsler, went seven innings, allowed five hits, one walk and six strikeouts. The problem was that the Royals faced Cy Young winner Max Scherzer. He went eight innings, gave up four hits and a walk, and struck out seven, while throwing 110 pitches.

Joe Nathan came on to pitch the ninth. Omar Infante singled with one out and pinch runner Pedro Ciriaco stole second. Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler drew one out walks to load the bases.  Alex Gordon lifted a sac fly to deep left scoring Ciriaco.

Tim Collins pitched the tenth for KC and walked two batters before Kinsler singled home Austin Jackson for the game winner with two outs.
