An Independence man has been charged in the death of a Smithville man in the parking lot of the Chiefs football stadium after a game December 1.

Kyle Van Winkle of Smithville died after an altercation following a game between the Chiefs and Broncos. The Jackson County Prosecutor has charged Joshua T. Bradley with involuntary manslaughter.

A witness says Bradley hit Van Winkle and then hit him again while he was on the ground. Police say Van Winkle got into the wrong vehicle because it looked like the one he came to the game in. A father and son thought he had broken into their car and people tailgating nearby began fighting with him.

Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker called it “a series of incredibly tragic events.”
