UPDATE: Bustamante post-conviction hearing postponed

November 14, 2013 By Jessica Machetta

Alyssa Bustamante, 19, is appealing a life sentence in the killing of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten. Bustamante claims her defense counsel was ineffective and that she was subjected to cruel and unusual punishment while awaiting trial.

Cole County Circuit Court Judge Patricia Joyce was to hear arguments Friday, Nov. 15, in the post-conviction appeals case. However, Joyce has approved a request for a continuance.

Cole County Circuit Courts Media Coordinator Bob Watson, who is also a reporter for the Jefferson City News Tribune, says the continuance was requested by Bustamante’s attorney. A new hearing date has not been scheduled.
