Cardinals rookie pitcher Shelby Miller finished a distant third in National League Rookie of the Year voting behind winner Jose Fernandez, starting pitcher for Miami, who went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA. Miller finished the season 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA. L.A.’s Yasiel Puig finished second. Fernandez finished with 26 first place votes. Puig had four, and Miller received just one vote. Miller got nine second place votes and 12 third place votes.
No surprise that outfielder Carlos Beltran turned down the Cardinals’ one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer on Monday. Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said so following Game Six of the World Series. At 36, Beltran is looking for more than a one year deal. With Beltran saying no, the Cardinals will get an extra draft pick between the first and second rounds next year. That ensures the Cardinals of two of the top 44 picks in the draft.
