Closer Edward Mujica struck out Todd Helton with the bases loaded as the Cardinals held off the Colorado Rockies 4-3 on Wednesday night to expand their lead to two games in the NL Central race as the Pirates lost 3-2 to San Diego.
Adam Wainwright was the hero for most of the night. He gave up two runs in the first and then settled down to earn his 17th win, second-most in the NL this season. He also went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
The Rockies threatened in the eighth as well. Wainwright allowed 10 hits and struck out eight, but left with two on and two outs in the eighth. Reliever Trevor Rosenthal got Charlie Blackmon to ground out to end the threat.
Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres, nowhere near a playoff spot are doing a great job of playing spoiler. They scored two in 9th off closer Mark Melancon, to hand the Pirates a 3rd loss in row, dropping the Bucs two games behind the Cards.
