The state senate has overturned the governor’s vetoes on about half of its bills….but the House has found the going slower.
Eighteen of the 29 bills vetoed by Governor Nixon after the spring session are senate bills. The senate has overridden eight of those vetoes and sent the bills to the House. No action has been taken on nine bills.
One override has failed–the so-called “paycheck protection bill” that critics say targets unions. Sponsor Dan Brown of rolla says it protects workers from employers who want them to contribute to the boss’s favorite causes.
But Senator Gina Walsh of St. Louis County, a union member, calls the bill the “paycheck DEception bill”–and unnecessary.
The bill has come up one short of override. One Republican lawmaker was not in the chamber when the vote was taken.
The House has spent much of the afternoon debating the much-contested tax bill, HB253. Republicans could not convince 15 members to support the override, and the attempt failed.
