Wainwright hit hard in Cards loss to Reds

September 3, 2013 By Bill Pollock

Shin-Soo Choo and Joey Votto homered for the Cincinnati Reds, who roughed up Adam Wainwright for the second start in a row, in the Cardinals 7-2 loss at Great American Ballpark. The Cardinals drop back one game behind Pittsburgh who beat Milwaukee.

The Reds tagged Wainwright (15-9) for nine runs in a career-low two innings back in St. Louis. On Monday, the Reds scored six runs on 10 hits in six innings.

In his last two starts against the Reds, Wainwright has given up 18 hits and 15 runs in eight innings. He’s 1-3 in four starts against Cincinnati this season with a 7.77 ERA.

However, with three strikeouts on the day, Wainwright moved him into a tie for 2nd place on the Cardinals all-time strikeouts list, tying Dizzy Dean with 1,095.  He still has a long way to go in catching Bob Gibson, who is first with 3,117.
