Royals stumble against the Sox

August 22, 2013 By Bill Pollock

White Sox starter Andre Rienzo (1-0) pitched six innings and became the first player from Brazil to win a Major League Baseball game. He and the Sox bullpen held the Royals to six hits in a 5-2 Royals loss.

Jeremy Guthrie (12-10) was tagged with the loss as the Sox scored five runs in the fourth, highlighted by Dayan Viciedo’s grand slam.

Rienzo gave up a sac fly run to Mike Moustakas while allowing just five hits and two walks. David Lough drove in another run for the Royals in the sixth, but the Royals have scored just five runs in their last 22 innings. It took the Sox just one to match.

The Royals are now 9.5 behind Detroit and five behind second place Cleveland in the division and 6.5 out of the wild card.
