Adam Wainwright was one off his career best for strikeouts in a game, punching out 11 Cubs in seven innings, as he helped win the series in a 6-1 finale Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
Wainwright won his 14th of the season by allowing just one run on five hits and walking just one. The Cardinals were aided by another Cubs error which led to two unearned runs as former Cards pitcher Edwin Jackson got tagged with his 13th loss of the season.
Yadier Molina added two more doubles and Jon Jay blew the game open in the seventh with a three-run homer off Cubs’ reliever James Russell.
