Cardinals cut into Pirates lead

August 18, 2013 By Bill Pollock

Earlier on Saturday afternoon the Cardinals took care of the Chicago Cubs with a 4-0 victory, thanks to starter Joe Kelly and three-relievers holding the Cubs to just five hits.

Now, the Cardinals only had five hits, but all of them were for extra bases. Doubles by Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran, and Jon Jay, plus a double and homer from Yadier Molina led to the Cardinals runs.

Saturday night, the Pirates lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 15-5. A six-run third inning chased rookie Jeff Locke, who allowed eight runs in 2.2 innings.

The Cardinals have typically struggled against lefties and it certainly started that way against Chicago’s Travis Wood. He retired the first nine Cardinal batters of the game. He gave up all four runs on four of the hits including the two-run home run by Yadier Molina. It was Molina’s ninth homer of the season and his first hit in eight at-bats since he came off the disabled list Thursday.
