The St. Louis Cardinals let out a huge sigh of relief after learning starting pitcher Shelby Miller has nothing more than a bruised elbow. Miller, making the start for the Cardinals in their 13-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, took a screaming line drive from Carl Crawford off the back of his arm, just above his elbow.
Miller went down behind the back of the pitcher’s mound and was immediately attended to by team trainers. X-rays were negative and Miller said the ball hit more muscle than bone and while it was a scary moment, he said he felt better after trainers iced his arm. The club is hopeful, he’ll be able to make his next start.
Michael Blazek came on to finish the first inning after Miller left after throwing just two pitches. Jake Westbrook had time to warm up and entered in the second inning and was tagged for six runs. Westbrook’s numbers suffered as he labored through 4.2 innings, getting charged with nine runs.
Pittsburgh topped Miami again 4-2, opening up a three game lead on the Cardinals.
