The defending Tandem Team champions, Melanie and Alan from Georgia, had a lead of close to one hour, but as they neared the Jefferson City checkpoint, they learned their lead was down to just over 15 minutes. Sun, wind, cramps and upset stomachs are par for the course.

Watch Melanie and Alan’s pit stop.

Closely behind them is a couple from Austin, TX. Virginia and Dodd are dealing with their own issues, but Virginia appeared strong and ready to make a charge at the leaders. Dodd didn’t have much time to train for the MR340, and is suffering a bit, but the two have paired up in similar races in their home state.  With the support of his mom and sisters, he is ready to push on.  Virginia talks with me during their rest period.

For both teams, it’s a quick stop in the capital for fluids, medicine and ice packs. Then back in their seats and back down the river.
