The American League beat the National League 3-0 to gain home field advantage for the World Series. Royals catcher Salvador Perez singled and scored in the eighth inning. It was the first Royals hit in an All-Star Game since Bo Jackson went 2 for 4 including a homer in 1989. Royals closer Greg Holland gave up one hit and a strikeout. Royals left fielder Alex Gordon flew out deep to center with two outs in the ninth in his only at-bat and made a nice catch on the Cardinals’ Allen Craig. who faced Mariano Rivera, the game’s MVP.

The National League only had three hits, and one of those came from Carlos Beltran, who got a nice round of applause from the New York crowd.

Yadier Molina and Matt Carpenter each went 0 for 2.  Chesterfield, Mo.  native Max Scherzer started the game for the American League  and pitched one inning and had a strikeout.
