Derek Jeter singled on his first pitch of the season, scored a run and went 1 for 4 with an RBI groundout in his return from ankle surgery to help the New York Yankees beat the Royals 8-4 this afternoon for a four-game series split.

The Royals built leads of 3-0 and 4-1, but Yankees’ starter Andy Pettitte settled down and won consecutive starts for the first time since April.  Lyle Overbay, who hit a grand slam Wednesday night, hit a go-ahead, two-run single in a four-run fifth against Ervin Santana.

Salvador Perez drove in two runs for the Royals.
