Treasurer gives back record amount of unclaimed property

July 2, 2013 By Matt Evans

Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel returned a record amount of unclaimed property in the fiscal year that ended earlier this week. The treasurer’s office returned nearly $40 million  in unclaimed property to Missourians in Fiscal Year 2013. Zweifel says that may have something to do with a record amount of unclaimed property coming into his office in the first place. Zweifel recovered more than $100 million last year alone. He also attributes efficiency for the record numbers.

“Because we’re doing this effectively with good government by eliminating red tape and bureaucracy,” said Zweifel. “We can better connect Missourians their money.”

Even with such a successful year in returning Missourian’s property, Zweifel says there’s still more than $760 million in unclaimed property available to around 4 and a half million Missourians.

“The average claim is $300. One in 10 Missourians actually has unclaimed property,” said Zweifel.

Zweifel says the best way for Missourians to find out if they have any unclaimed property is to go to his website, showmemoney.com
