Before Wednesday night’s game, the Cardinals announced that starting pitcher Jaime Garcia would have season ending shoulder surgery this week. His current replacement in the rotation, Tyler Lyons, then went out and won his major league debut in the Cardinals 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres.  Lyons pitched seven solid innings, holding the Padres to one run on four hits. Yadier Molina had four hits and Carlos Beltran finished with three as the Cardinals took two of three from the Padres.

Garcia will have surgery on Friday, performed by the team’s head physician, George Paletta. Garcia went on the disabled list Sunday after an increasing amount of pain in his left shoulder over the last couple of weeks. Garcia was shut down twice last season and missed two months and was taken off the postseason roster.

Jake Westbook, on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation, cut his bullpen session short after experiencing pain in his injured elbow.
