Royals bullpen stumbles late in Baltimore

May 8, 2013 By Bill Pollock

Baltimore’s Matt Wieters drove in three runs, including the tiebreaker in the eighth inning, a ball that hit the chalk down the left field line for an RBI double, and the Orioles beat the Royals 4-3 on Tuesday night at Camden Yards.

The Royals battled back from a three-run deficit after the first inning and tied the game in the seventh on Alex Gordon’s fourth homer of the year, but Tim Collins and Luke Hochevar couldn’t keep the game tied in the eighth.  Adam Jones drew a leadoff walk from Collins (1-1) and advanced when Hochevar threw wildly to first base on a pickoff attempt. Wieters then lofted an opposite-field fly to left that hit the chalk as Gordon was late in getting over.

The Orioles three runs in the first inning snapped Ervin Santana’s string of 13 consecutive scoreless innings.
