Royals split with Indians on day-night DH

April 29, 2013 By Bill Pollock

Former Royals shortstop Mike Aviles hit a three-run homer and finished with a career-high five RBIs, as the Indians broke out of their slump by beating the Royals 10-3 in the night cap of a doubleheader on Sunday.

Will Smith, making the spot start, gave up the homer to Aviles and left after four innings. He allowed six runs, four earned. The Royals committed three errors that helped lead to four unearned runs. Bruce Chen gave up the two other unearned runs.

In game one, Jeremy Guthrie got plenty of offense to back him in a 9-0 victory in the afternoon. Guthrie allowed six hits over 6.2 innings to improve to 3-0.  Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon homered to pace Kansas City.  Escobar’s solo shot came in the fifth inning and Gordon’s two-run homer came in the eighth, capping a big afternoon for the Royals offense. Jarrod Dyson also drove in a pair of runs, and Mike Moustakas had a single and three walks — one with the bases loaded.
