The Cardinals’ purchased the contract of right-hander Seth Maness, the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2012, and was added to the club’s 40-man roster. To make room for Maness on the 25-man roster, left-hander Marc Rzepczynski was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Heading into tonight’s game with Cincinnati, the bullpen has an ERA of 6.08.
Rzepczynski has allowed six of seven inherited runners to score in his eight relief innings this season in addition to the seven runs and 13 hits he’s allowed.
The 24-year-old Maness went 14-4 with a 2.97 ERA last season, starting in Class A Palm Beach and finishing with Double-A Springfield. He earned him a non-roster invitation to Major League Spring Training this year and was then placed in Triple-A Memphis’ rotation to start the season.
In four starts, Maness allowed 12 earned runs on 34 hits in 25 innings, with 18 strikeouts, and just three walks.
