Adam Wainwright retired 13 batters in a row at one point and came two outs away from a complete game as he dominated Washington hitters in a 2-0 victory for the Cardinals over the Nationals. Edward Mujica came on for the final two outs to record his third save of the season, and second in consecutive nights.
Wainwright scattered five hits and one walk while striking out eight. One of those hits was a leadoff double by Bryce Harper in the ninth. Wainwright came back to strike out Adam LaRoche before giving way to Mujica who needed just three pitches for the final two outs.
The Cardinals managed to score two runs off St. Louis native and Missouri State product Ross Detwiler, who entered the game with a .90 ERA. Four straight hits to start the fourth led to the runs. Shane Robinson scored on an Allen Craig double, after he singled to leadoff the inning. Matt Holliday singled and moved Craig to third who scored when Carlos Beltran brought him in with a single. Detwiler coaxed outs from Yadier Molina, David Freese and Matt Carpenter.
Wainwright’s ERA falls below two at 1.93 and Detwiler’s creeps up to 1.38.
