Franklin leads Mizzou’s first team to win at Black and Gold Game (VIDEO)

April 20, 2013 By Bill Pollock

James Franklin led a comeback effort in front of a crowd of just over 18,000 fans on a perfect day at Faurot Field, as the Mizzou-One team picked up a 21-14 win over the Tiger-Two team at the Black and Gold game in Columbia, Mo.

The Tiger Two squad, primarily made up of reserves, jumped out to a 14-0 advantage on the scoreboard, but senior QB James Franklin and the starters tied the game by halftime. Franklin hit 9-of-15 passes and tailback Marcus Murphy scored on two straight runs totalling 24 yards for the first touchdown. The Tiger No. 1 offense put together a 60 yard drive, that ended with a six-yard score from Murphy.

Henry Josey, playing for the first time since a knee injury in 2011, tied the game at 14-14 with a one-yard run late in the second quarter. Josey finished the game with 13 yards on eight carries.Sophomore WR Dorial Green-Beckham, named the spring’s most improved receiver, caught three passes for 49 yards, including a 35-yard catch and run down the sideline.

Defensively, senior DE Michael Sam closed out a strong spring camp with four tackles, including two sacks. Sophomore CB Xavier Smith had three tackles, an interception and a pass broken up, while junior DT Matt Hoch tipped a Corbin Berkstresser pass and pulled down the interception while hanging virtually parallel to the ground.
