Missourians buying energy efficient appliances beginning this weekend will find themselves saving money. Anyone who buys an ‘Energy Star’ appliance will be sales tax exempted during the Show-Me Green Sales Tax holiday.
Shoppers will save a little more than four percent off their purchase of appliances such as washers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, water heaters, air conditioners, and heat pumps. However, Missouri Retailers Association President, David Overfelt says dryers are not included. “Almost all appliances qualify, but dryers- the technology still is not there yet to qualify for an ‘Energy Star’ rating,” he said.
The sales tax exemption only applies to the first $1,500 spent on each appliance. If an appliance costs more than $1,500, then the regular sales tax rate takes effect for any purchase price that exceeds $1,500.
Overfelt says almost all appliance retailers across the state will be carrying the energy efficient appliances, which he has has become a mainstay in most inventories. He suggests that potential shoppers should also keep their eyes peeled for other deals retailers might be offering. “There might be potential for rebates, free delivery, and sales,” he said. “Because they want to get foot traffic into their stores.”
He says upon making a purchase on ‘Energy Star’ appliances, sometimes there are tax credits as well on income tax that does apply. But energy savings alone over a few years can help pay for the cost of replacement.
The Show-Me Green Sales Tax holiday begins this weekend (April 19) and ends on April 25. Overfelt says this is the fifth year the Show-Me Green Sales Tax holiday will be held. The holiday was established in legislation in 2008 by the Missouri General Assembly.
