Home runs from Matt Holliday, Pete Kozma and Jon Jay broke open a 1-1 tie and gave the St. Louis Cardinals their first win of the 2013 season, a 6-1 final Tuesday night in Arizona. Jaime Garcia picked up the win going 5.2 innings.
Garcia gave up just two hits, one of those was a second inning homer, but he also walked four and left in the sixth inning when he got in trouble clinging to a 3-1 lead.
Edward Mujica struck out A.J. Pollock with the bases loaded after Garcia walked three straight batters with two outs. Trevor Rosenthal and Mitchell Boggs pitched the eighth and ninth.
Holliday gave Garcia the lead when he hit a two run homer off Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill, a former teammate of Holliday’s in Oakland. Kozma and Jay added the insurance when Kozma homered off Heath Bell in the seventh and Jay followed two batters later off Bell after he walked Shane Robinson.
