Wainwright, Cardinals agree to extension

March 28, 2013 By Missourinet Contributor

The St. Louis Cardinals and starting pitcher Adam Wainwright have reportedly agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep the right-hander with the club through the 2018 season.

According to multiple sources, including the Post-Dispatch, the deal is worth close to $100 million.

Wainwright, 31, missed the entire 2011 season after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but bounced back with a 14-13 record last year, including a 3.94 earned run average in 198 2/3 innings over 32 starts.

The 6-foot-7, 235-pounder originally inked a six-year, $36 million deal in 2008 which was set to expire at the end of the 2013 season. Since then, Wainwright has finished in the top three for the National League Cy Young award twice, being runner-up to Roy Halladay in 2010.

After making his MLB debut in 2005, the veteran righty has totaled 80 wins and 48 losses for a career 3.15 ERA in 214 contests — 151 of which have been starts.
