Wainwright pushes through final spring tune up

March 27, 2013 By Bill Pollock

Cardinals Opening Day starter Adam Wainwright is ready for Monday’s game at Arizona. In his final tuneup of the spring, Wainwright threw 97 pitches over six innings in the Cardinals 11-4 win over the Mets.  Wainwright got touched for a couple of runs in the first three innings as he labored early, needed 58 pitches for the early three innings, but did much better over the final three. Wainwright’s fastball topped out in the upper 80’s, nothing unusual for him this time of year.

Pete Kozma hit a grand slam and Yadier Molina a two run shot. Carlos Beltran was back on the field in a Cardinals uniform for the first time in a month and said his pinkie toe is going to be sore for a while, but he looked good, getting a hit and two walks…evening stealing a base. Matt Holliday took himself out of the lineup with tightness in his left side. No big worries. He said it was precautionary.
