Royals tie record for number of spring training wins

March 26, 2013 By Bill Pollock

The Royals won their fifth straight game, 8-2, over the Dodgers and former Royal Zack Greinke on Monday night at Surprise Stadium and posted their 22nd Cactus League win, matching the club record set in 1999. The Royals’ record is 22-6-1.  The 1999 team won 22 spring games, then finished the regular season 64-97 in 161 games. That team had Johnny Damon, Jermaine Dye, Carlos Beltran and Mike Sweeney.

Royals manager Ned Yost is smart enough to know that what happens in March doesn’t always translate into the regular season, but he’s still pleased.

“We’ve had a great spring, we’ve accomplished everything we wanted to accomplish,” Yost said. “I think tonight we tied the franchise record for wins, which is nothing to whoop and holler about, but it’s still an accomplishment. … It just gives you a good feeling going into the season.”
