March winter

Today might be the first day of spring, but it’s still looking a lot like winter in Missouri. The National Weather Service in Springfield says a snow storm is moving through Southwest Missouri this morning, dropping four to six inches in that area, with lesser amounts extending outward into Central and West Central Missouri.

Meteorologist Dave Gaede says the heaviest snow will fall in the Springfield area and says once it starts, it will be wet and heavy and come down quickly, creating slick conditions for motorists.

Though he says it should melt as temperatures rise into the 40-degree range over the next couple of days, another system is expected to dump more snow on Missouri on Saturday.

To check the forecast in your area, visit the National Weather Service in Springfield, National Weather Service in Kansas City (Pleasant Hill), and National Weather Service in St. Louis. For weather conditions in Southeast Missouri portion of Missouri, visit the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky.

Gaede says the areas marked tan, which means “special weather statement,” means inclement weather is possible, but no accumulation is forecast. He says those areas need to be aware they could see some snow or rain today.
