The St. Louis Cardinals signed Ronny Cedeno as insurance as the shortstop position if Rafael Furcal’s return to the lineup was going to be delayed. Well, Furcal needed season ending surgery…and the Cardinals still released Cedeno.  With Pete Kozma named the starter and Daniel Descalso showing his ability to play the position, the club released Cedeno, freeing up a roster spot most likely for Matt Adams.

“It surprised me a little bit, but it’s part of baseball,” said Cedeno. “I don’t have control of that. I only have control of myself and can work hard. I think they were going in a different direction.”

Cedeno signed a one-year, $1.15 million contract, and will be paid $284,050 since it was a non-guaranteed contract. Cedeno is free to move to another team.
