Daniel Descalso homered in Sunday’s 5-3 loss to Boston. In the Cardinals debut on Saturday, David Freese homered in the club’s 8-3 loss to Miami. First baseman Matt Adams was unavailable for the Cardinals on Sunday after waking up with a sore left knee.
“I have no idea how it happened,” manager Mike Matheny said. “He said he just woke up and it was swollen. We’ll keep a close eye on it.”
Matheny also said the club will not use Beltran in centerfield this season, in an effort to protect Beltran’s achy knees from further stress. The Cardinals used the DH spot on Sunday and got Rafael Furcal two at-bats. Furcal’s sore elbow has hindered him from throwing and hitting left-handed, but he has continued to take swings right-handed while getting treatment. He went 0 for 2.
Adam Wainwright will start Monday’s game against Houston. The Cardinals’ first pitch is set for 12:05 p.m.
