Alex Steen’s goal 52 seconds into overtime helped the St. Louis Blues break a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.
Patrik Berglund and Vladamir Tarasenko added goals and Jake Allen, making his first NHL start, stopped 15 shots as the Blues snapped an 0-4-1 skid. After a shaky start, Allen settled in and played well.
Detroit jumped out to a 2-0 lead 7:54 into the game. The Blues got a shorthanded goal in the first when T.J. Oshie fed Berglund with a pass from his knees. Berglund blasted a wrist shot past Howard cutting the lead.
Victor Tarasenko beat Howard at 7:12 of the second on the power play, giving the Blues an 8-for-14 success rate against Detroit this season. Chris Stewart took a stretch pass from Alex Pietrangelo and beat Howard on a backhand breakaway attempt at 8:57 of the second period.
After a Detroit timeout, Pavel Datsyuk tied the game with 7:21 left in the second when he banked a shot off Allen from behind the net.
