A Missouri congressman has signed a letter to the president regarding the gun control legislative package, saying it’s not the guns that are the main issue.
Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) has signed onto a letter to President Obama defending the Second Amendment and voicing his concern, as well as many other law-abiding Americans, regarding the President’s gun control legislative package.
Luetkemeyer says the focus of the letter is to inform the President on the importance of doing a better job of finding those people who might need to seek mental health treatment so they won’t do harm not only to members of society, but also to themselves. He says it’s not the guns that are the main issue, it’s the mental state of the individual with the gun.
“Which is not being able to understand what’s right and what’s wrong that is causing this to happen,” he says. “And as a result- let’s go to the real root cause of the individual who is perpetrating this act. Do they not understand the seriousness of the crime? Do they not understand the importance of life?”
He says that’s where the government needs to focus on spending money, and get those individuals help. “What’s snapped? What caused them to do this?” he says. “That’s where we need to focus.”
Luetkemeyer is one of 77 legislators, including Rep. Dan Benishek (R-MI) who originated the letter, and signed it in an effort to get a discussion going about how to proceed after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December.
