Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons picked off Matt Cassel on the second play of overtime, setting up a 23 yard field goal by Shaun Suisham and handing the home team a 16-13 win in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers won and played most of the second half without Ben Roethlisberger, who left with a right shoulder injury in the third quarter after getting sacked by Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. Veteran backup Byron Leftwich came on in relief and completed 7 of 14 passes for 73 yards, but the Chiefs had their chances to win.
Jamaal Charles ran for 100 yards and a score for the Chiefs (1-8), who have lost six straight. His touchdown gave the Chiefs a 7-0 lead in the first quarter…their first lead in regulation all season.
Ryan Succop hit a 22 yard field goal early in the second to put the Chiefs up 10-0, but the Steelers responded and tied the game going into the half.
Pittsburgh took the lead on a Suisham field goal early in the fourth, but Cassel led the Chiefs on a 52 yard drive, starting at their 20 with 1:51 remaining, giving Succop a 46 yard field goal as time expired in regulation. Cassel converted on a 4th and 15 to keep the drive alive.
Early in the third, it looked liked the Chiefs had a touchdown when Cassel found Dwayne Bowe in the flat and he raced 22 yards for a score, but Brandon Albert was flagged for a questionable holding penalty at the 10 yard line nullifying the play.
According to stats on ESPN.com, Cassel was 0-8 and was sacked once on third down. Cassel’s eight third-down pass attempts without a completion are the most for any quarterback in a single game in the last five seasons. Entering Monday, Cassel had completed an NFL-high 68.8 percent of his third-down passes this season. Cassel finished 11 of 26 for 154 with just one turnover…but a costly one.
