The Kansas City men’s basketball squad battled the Seton Hall Pirates in the first half, but they were held to only 14 second-period points on the way to a 75-36 season-opening loss on Friday night.

The ‘Roos (0-1) played right with the Pirates (1-0) in the opening eight minutes, getting a three from sophomore Estan Tyler to make it 13-11 in favor of the home squad with 12:20 on the clock. SHU then went on a 14-2 rally that spanned 5:33 to take control.

UMKC wouldn’t let it get away though, getting the margin back down to 12 at the break, led by the final five points of the half from junior center Fred Chatmon. The Pirates took a 34-22 lead into the intermission thanks to 52.4 percent shooting. UMKC hit only 33.3 percent in the half, led by six points from both Tyler and junior forward Kirk Korver.

The final half is where it fell apart, with Seton Hall jumping on Kansas City for a 17-2 run, making it a 27-point game with 14:31 on the clock.

By the 9:24 mark, the Pirates were up by 33, and pushed it to as many as 40 before the contest was over. UMKC was out-scored 41-14 in the period overall, and shot just 28.6 percent.

Chatmon led UMKC with nine points, while Tyler finished with eight. Chatmon also set a career-high with eight boards in the outing. The ‘Roos had 20 turnovers that turned into 30 Pirate points on the night, while getting out-rebounded by a 44-28 clip.

Kansas City will open the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday when Division II Lincoln (Mo.) comes to town for a 7:05 p.m. tipoff at Swinney Recreation Center.
