Eduardo Nunez’s triple off Max Scherzer’s first pitch of the sixth inning took care of the former Missouri Tiger pitcher’s no-hit bid, and Nick Swisher’s double two batters later broke up the shutout, but what Scherzer did before that was near perfect as he finished with 10 strikeouts over 5.2 innings to help send the Detroit Tigers back to the World Series.  Over the last two seasons, Scherzer is now 2-0 against the Yankees in postseason play, allowing just two runs in 13 innings with five walks and 17 strikeouts.

Scherzer is a part of a Detroit rotation that has a postseason ERA of 1.02 and they will await the winner of the Cardinals/Giants series. The World Series begins next Wednesday.  In last year’s ALCS against Texas, the Chesterfield, MO. native  went 0-1 in two starts against the Rangers, allowing nine runs in 8.1 innings.  Watch Scherzer talk about wanting a shot at redemption in the playoffs .
