APHIS: Kansas City Zoo chimp was starving

October 18, 2012 By Mike Lear

An animal welfare agent says a chimpanzee that died in December at the Kansas City Zoo was starving and weighed nearly 60 pounds less than normal. 13-year-old Nusu had lost nearly 40 percent of his body weight in about 20 months.

The federal Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service says his weight loss was caused by other chimps, who were keeping him from the food. The zoo has been cited for five cases of noncompliance but no penalties were leveled.

The zoo hired a new director over the summer.
