Cards make quick work of Giants after rain delay

October 17, 2012 By Bill Pollock

Game 3 of the NLCS between the Cardinals and Giants was in a rain delay for three hours and 26 minutes with two outs in the seventh and the Cardinals up 3-1 with two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd.   When play resumed, Javier Lopez retired Jon Jay to end the seventh and Jason Motte was called on to get the last six outs for the save.

Before the heavy rains came, Shane Robinson picked up an RBI on a groundout to second with the bases loaded in the seventh off San Fran starter Matt Cain.  The Cards took a 2-1 lead on a Matt Carpenter homer in the third.  He replaced Carlos Beltran who left the game with a knee sprain.

The last two innings took just 33 minutes to complete.
