59 year old high school referee Jim Duniven collapsed on the field after suffering a heart attack during a varsity high school soccer match on Thurday evening and died.

Duniven was working at Kirkwood High School and issued a yellow card to one of the players and as the player walked away, parents in the stands starting yelling that the ref collapsed.

Kirkwood varsity coach and athletic director Chris Steinmetz, an athletic trainer and a player’s parent who is a doctor rushed over to Duniven. CPR was performed until emergency workers arrived. Duniven was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Duniven was honored by MSHSAA in 2005 as Referee of the Year.
