Andres Torres of the New York Mets was called out for missing first base after rounding the bag and heading to second for a double in the ninth inning. Under the watchful eye of Carlos Beltran and quick thinking of manager Mike Matheny, that may have saved the tying run from scoring, and preserved a 5-4 victory for the Cardinals on Monday afternoon.

Matheny called Beltran the MVP of the game, even though he wasn’t on the field. Beltran was behind the dugout in the tunnel taking batting practice, when he happened to look up at the TV.

It looked like Torres may have missed the corner of the base, so Beltran ran out to Matheny and suggested he appeal the call. It worked. First base umpire Dave Rackley called Torres out. You can see from the video, that Rackley was right there watching.

After the game, Mets manager Terry Collins still couldn’t believe the call was made and Torres is convinced he touched first base.
