Central Missouri volleyball continues remarkable run in national rankings

September 4, 2012 By Bill Pollock

The Central Missouri Jennies volleyball team held their No. 5 ranking from a week ago, in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll after going 3-1 at the Hemmingway’s Island Grill Classic in Pensacola, Fla. The Jens have appeared in the AVCA Coaches Poll since its debut in 1986, a record 331 consecutive weeks.

UCM claimed three victories over the weekend, including a five-set win over then 10th-ranked Indianapolis, who moved up two spots after also going 3-1. The loss came at the hands of #2 Tampa, who took one spot back this week, into a tie for third with Southwest Minnesota State.

Concordia-St. Paul held onto the top spot, earning all 32 first-place votes after a 3-0 start to the season. Pre-season No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino fell to No. 11 after going 2-2 on the week.  MIAA newcomers Nebraska-Kearney improved two spots to No. 2 with their 3-0 start. Washburn remained at No. 7, while Truman received 5 votes in the poll.

The Jennies take on two more ranked opponents next weekend, as they travel to Denver, Colo. for the Colorado Premier Challenge. The Jens will take on #14 West Texas A&M and #10 Metro State on Friday, September 7, followed by another two matches against opponents to be determined on Saturday, September 8.
