Chen shuts down Detroit

August 30, 2012 By Bill Pollock

Bruce Chen pitched eight scoreless innings, his longest outing since his final two starts of 2011 when he also pitched eight innings, as the Royals took their second game in a row from Detroit with a 1-0 win over the Tigers.

Mike Moustakas doubled down the right-field line with one out in the fourth inning off Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez, and Eric Hosmer popped a pitch over Sanchez’s head that dropped between the mound and second base, allowing Moustakas to score.

Chen allowed four hits and a walk while striking out four. Chen improves to 10-10 on the year.

Greg Holland earned his ninth save by striking out Delmon Young and Jhonny Peralta after allowing two singles around a diving catch in center from Jarrod Dyson that preserved the win.
