Marco Scutaro’s grand slam off Mitchell Boggs in the ninth inning capped off San Francisco’s explosive night at the plate, which included a career high seven RBIs for Scutaro, as the Cardinals dropped a 15-0 final Wednesday at Busch Stadium.
Ahead 2-0, the Giants broke it open with five runs in the sixth off rookie starter Joe Kelly. The game turned into a blowout as the Giants tacked on four runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth. “We got to have a short memory on this one and look forward to getting out here tomorrow and changing what we looked like tonight,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said.
The Cardinals were held to just four hits, two of those from Jon Jay, who is now 11 for 22 in his last six games. Joe Kelly dropped to 2-5, was charged with seven runs, four earned. Mitchell Boggs allowed a run for the first time in 24 appearances. He was charged with the grand slam in his third of an inning of work.
